VARC in the CITY Group Show

VARC in the CITY

VARC in the CITY Group Show Abject Gallery, Bamburgh House, Newcastle 21 Nov – 19 Dec 2015

Visual Arts in Rural Communities (VARC) is a registered charity based at Highgreen, Tarset, Northumberland that funds and manages an on-going programme of twelve-month residencies for visual artists and projects with special schools.

Through the residencies it offers opportunities to artists to develop new work in response to the remote rural landscape and its community.  Residents and visiting groups engage with art and artists, through contact and creative activity.   I would say this is covered in the text above and further on

VARC’s artist residency is unique.  It is the only twelve-month supported artist residency in rural UK.  It provides an artist a substantial period to live and make artwork in a hill-farming community in remote rural Northumberland; an experience artists find hugely beneficial to their practice and life enhancing.

On display here are artworks by many VARC associated artists who have either been past Artists in Residence or completed projects with VARC.   We are proud to be able to showcase their work in a city centre location for the first time.

Also exhibited is a set of prints we have commissioned.   Imi Maufe, Nigel Morgan, Jilly Morris, Helen Pailing and Jenny Purrett have each created an image that express an aspect of their individual experiences of the Highgreen landscape during their residencies.

Sales of artwork supports VARC’s unique twelve-month artist residency programme and its engagement work.
